(100) man up hill if he is going that way, and kick him down if he has started. SeH as near for cash as yon can. Never trust a doubtful customer; learn to say "No" firmly, but courteously.
Avoid inviting loafers to your store. Always return the money for shoes if customer is not suited. Attend to all the little details gratuitously; fasten on a button, take off a heet lifl, supply a lace; by doing this cheerfully you win your way into the affections of your trade. Don't " boss " your clerks in the presence of customers. Address them as Mr. Smith, Mr. Brown, etc. Never talk loud in the store. Be truthful and get the confidence of your customer. Be honest, cheerful, and my word lor it you will succeed.

Having read all the articles in your valuable paper OD "How to Manage a Retail Boot and Shoe Store," I will try and give my ideas and points on it too.
Among the first qualities, to be successful in a le-tail boot and shoe store, and as I have grown up in a shoe store from the bench, and succeeded well, would say first of all never have a boot or shoe or try to sell one, unless you are positive that your customer gets full value in buying the goods, no matterif the shoes only cost 25 cents a pair. This must be the aim and convicton to start with, and success will crown every honest effort.
In order to classify the different kinds of letail boot and shoe stores, 1 pot them down as No. i, No, 3, No. 3, and I like to bluff off some of the drummers trying to sell poor or extremely fine goods by naming them Buttermilk, Milk and Cream.
No. 1, Buttermilk, I call all shoddy and poor auction goods ; No. 2, Milk, nil good solid leather goods well-made and reliable; No. 3, Cream, all extras, txtra fine in style and price. These are the three hinds of stores, and you will find them in all large cities. In smaller towns the No. 2 is the best, and (.0.)

(102) will succeed. Neither No. i or No. $ has cnougii custom to maintain itself.
Now, my advice to all is, be careful and know where you start. If in a large city, ask yourself in which No. I, No. 2, or No. 3, you are most suitable for, and if you want to do a large bnsiness go for No. 2. Keep plenty of good "Milk," good regular goods, It [^ces that are popular, and you will see by each day's sales what your customers want, and can pay for. Be sure and be on the lookout for the best goods at the lowest prices. Give your customers a good selection both in style and quality, so they know when they come and buy that you want to do them good. Have them well suited both in comfort and quality of goods.
